If you’re tired of trying to make money without working and have a little stake to invest, you might want to consider something completely different. Greyhound handicapping for a living. Now, before you click away because you think it’s crazy to say that anyone can make money at the dog track, consider this. Someone makes money every day at greyhound tracks all over the US.

That’s right. Ten percent of the people who go to the track make money, on average. And now I know you’re saying, “Yeah, so 90% of the people lose and that’s why it’s not a good way to make money.” Well, that depends. Obviously for those 90% it isn’t a good way to make money. But what if you’re not like them.

If you’re good with numbers or good at figuring out puzzles or have an analytical mind, you might find out that you’re very good at handicapping greyhounds. Or you might find out that you’re good and can get better at picking winners at the dog track.

The only way to find out is by trying it. Now, before you say that – no way are you going to plunk down money on bets to find out that you’re a loser – consider this. You don’t have to risk a penny to try it out. That’s right. You can bet on greyhound races – on paper – by downloading programs from the tracks, making your picks, and “betting” them by writing down what you would have played.

Try it for awhile. If nothing else, it’s good exercise for your brain. See if you have a knack for picking out dogs who are likely to run in the money. Most programs explain how to bet, so if you don’t know how, read that section first. Then make your bets right on the page for every race. When you’re done, go to the racing results and find out how you did.

Some people never get past betting on paper, but have a really good time. It’s the same as doing crossword puzzles or sudoku is to other people. It keeps them sharp and – especially for retirees – it gives them an alternative to TV or sitting around with nothing to do.

If you find that you do well at picking dogs, you can try it for real at your local greyhound track. Just make sure that you stay within the limits of however much you can comfortably spend on this hobby. Betting more than you can afford to can really ruin your fun.
