Do you prefer keying on one dog in quinielas? Or do you like to box your bets and put two or three other dogs with your key dog so that you win if they come in either way? Although it might seem like a no-brainer, whether to key or box your bets isn’t as simple as it seems.

Most people would say that boxing a bet is the best way to have the most chances of winning. Not always. Sometimes, it can be a better bet to key on one dog with two or three other dogs, thus spreading out the chances you have to win.

If you box a dog with two other dogs in a quiniela, for instance, it costs $6. In order to win, two of your dogs have to be in the quiniela. If one comes in without the other one, you lose, even though your key dog came in.

If you play your key dog with another dog in a $2 quiniela bet, you can bet 3 quiniela bets with three different other dogs for $6. This gives you more of a chance at hitting a longer shot dog with your key dog, which would pay more.

Of course, you have to be able to handicap to pick likely dogs to put with your key dog. Just picking 3 other dogs at random isn’t how to do it. You still have to know the basics of handicapping and you can’t bet every race. Than again, you shouldn’t be betting every race, whether you’re making key bets or box bets.

A good way to see which bet is best for you is by going over old programs, picking key dogs and then seeing which would have paid the most: box bets or key bets. Do it without looking at the results first so that you won’t be influenced and then check the results after you’ve made your “paper” bets.

You might find that you’re making key bets, when box bets would have worked better or vice versa. Whatever kind of bets you make, going over old programs to see how your system is working is a good idea every once in awhile anyway.
